1. Search Console

Interested?

Price: absolutely free!

Purpose: To check own websites

Link: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=nl

The Google Search Console is by far the best tool to quickly and easily check your website in Google. Currently there are 2 versions* of the Console, an old and a new version. The new version is in line with Google's other products. However, this version is still in beta and may be missing features that are present on the old Search Console. So switching regularly is the message.

* Update 10/08/2021: Google currently only handles the most recent version of Google Search Console.

So what can you all do to get your website better in Google?

You can:

  • Check your website's keyword positions.
  • checking that all the links on your website are in order.
  • submit pages for re-indexing.
  • resolve security issues.
  • highlighting data so Google can better index pages.
  • Check AMP pages for errors.
  • so much more!

So be sure that all your websites are in the Google Search Console. That way, you can be sure of a good indexation in Google and increase your chances of reaching more potential customers.

2. Screaming Frog

Interested?

Price: Totally free (up to 500 links), thereafter £149.00 per year
Purpose: To monitor own websites
Link: https://www.screamingfrog.co.uk/seo-spider/

The tool looks like it's from 10 years ago and the name doesn't do the tool justice either. Yet Screaming Frog is one of the best SEO tools. Why? The tool allows you to analyze any website down to the bone. It lets you know, page by page, which SEO aspects can be improved. Is a particular page missing a title? Or does an image have no alt tag. Screaming Frog investigates everything for you.

Screaming Frog is completely free to download for both Windows and iOS. Want to analyze more than 500 pages per website? Then you need a paid version. For 149 pounds a year, you already have a license to analyze unlimited pages. But psst: the free version will get you a long way, too.

3. Answer the Public

Interested?

Price: Totally free up to $49 per month
Purpose: Find search phrases and synonyms
Link: https://answerthepublic.com/

What at first glance seems like a strange intro page is a top tool in terms of keywords. You enter a keyword and the tool looks for synonyms, relevant words and phrases and more. Highly recommended for writing SEO copy and triggering your target audience. It's free too! Test out the tool quickly and be amazed.

4. Ubersuggest

Interested?

Price: absolutely free!
Purpose: Find keywords
Link: https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/

The name kind of says it all: a tool that gives suggestions for each keyword. You can take that very literally. You just have to think about it and Ubersuggest already knows relevant keywords. By the way, the url gives away that the tool is one by Neil Patel, a world-class SEO expert.

You can filter by keyword, search volume, CPC and competition. Personally, we often filter by search volume and see which keywords with high search volume can be useful and have low competition. Ubersuggest is absolutely free. Be sure to try it out, it pays off.

5. Google Pagespeed

Interested?

Price: absolutely free!
Purpose: Analyze page/website speed
Link: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/

Google isn't sitting still either, of course, and beyond Search Console (and other webmaster tools), it has another handy tool: Google Pagespeed. With Google Pagespeed, you can completely analyze a page for speed. Google indicates which aspects of your website can be optimized. A win-win situation: your website loads faster and Google shows your website higher in the search results because your website loads faster than those of the competition. Want to take a look?

6. Byte Check

Interested?

Price: absolutely free!
Purpose: To analyze TTFB (Time to First Byte).
Link: http://www.bytecheck.com/

You've optimized your website for speed. That's certainly good, but what about your server? You can easily check that with Bytecheck. The tool checks the Time To First Byte. In other words, it checks the server's response time.

A TTFB of more than 400 milliseconds is not good. The figure indicates that either the server cannot run your website properly, the server is not optimized or the server location is too far from your location.

Be sure to check the TTFB. Your Web site may be so optimized, but a server can slow it down immediately. So be sure not to face any surprises.

7. MozBar

Interested?

Price: absolutely free!
Purpose: To analyze websites for SEO
Link: https://moz.com/products/pro/seo-toolbar

Moz is one of the leading websites regarding SEO. They have some tools that many SEOs use. Most of Moz's tools are paid, but the MozBar remains free. The MozBar is an extension for Google Chrome. It lets you quickly check, in Google or on the website itself, the authority of the website. This way you know immediately whether you have a better or worse authority than your competitor. Quickly install the extension and get started!

8. Majestic

Interested?

Price: Limited number of searches per day, thereafter € 46.99 per month
Purpose: To analyze websites for SEO
Link: https://nl.majestic.com/

Like Moz, Majestic is another Web site used almost equally by SEOs. Majestic does display slightly different numbers. With Moz, you focus mainly on the authority of the domain name and the pages. With Majestic you focus on the Trust Flow and Citation Flow.

The Trust Flow is a number from 1 to 100, indicating how many quality, incoming links there are. The Citation Flow is a number from 1 to 100 that indicates how many links are coming in. The ratio of both figures must equal 1 to be balanced. Be sure to check it out for your website to know how many qualitative links you have.

9. Yoast (online)
