Shopify limits iDEAL: what does this mean for your shop?

Have you heard? Shopify is restricting the use of iDEAL for small webshops. This of course causes quite a commotion in the e-commerce world, especially in Belgium and the Netherlands. iDEAL and Bancontact are among the most widely used payment methods. At Tunity, we are following this update closely, as what impact will it have on your webshop? We explain it further in our blog!

What does the limitation of iDEAL mean?

Shopify has changed the rules around iDEAL. From now on only merchants that have been active for more than 90 days, have processed more than 100 orders, use a paid plan and have a chargeback ratio below 1% are allowed to continue offering iDEAL. For many smaller merchants this means that iDEAL will disappear from their payment options without mercy.

Why this is a problem for small web shops

iDEAL is the standard payment method in the Netherlands. Belgian customers also often expect Bancontact or iDEAL with their purchase. Does iDEAL suddenly disappear from your Shopify webshop? Then you notice it immediately in fewer conversions and sales.

But this goes beyond just iDEAL. It exposes a fundamental risk: with Shopify, as a shop owner, you hardly have any influence on the platform's decisions. Today it's about iDEAL, tomorrow it might be about other payment methods, integrations or even the pricing structure.

The disadvantages of Shopify

Shopify is undoubtedly a strong and user-friendly system, but it also has a downside. Namely, you are relinquishing control of your webshop:

  • Shopify determines which payment methods you can offer.
  • Shopify determines the conditions and restrictions for your shop.
  • Shopify can suddenly adjust fees or commissions.

For many entrepreneurs, this only becomes apparent when it is too late. As long as everything is running smoothly, you don't notice it much. But as the iDEAL example shows, one decision can suddenly take a big bite out of your sales. And unfortunately, there's nothing you can do about it.

Why WooCommerce could be interesting for your webshop

Where Shopify often limits you in choices, WooCommerce gives you just the freedom to completely customize your shop:

  • You choose which payment provider to integrate (Mollie, Pay.co.uk, Stripe...).
  • You decide which payment methods you offer to your customers.
  • You retain full control of your webshop, without depending on the choices of a platform.

WooCommerce runs on WordPress, an open-source system we often work with at Tunity. As a result, the community, countless plugins and payment providers together ensure maximum freedom. No restrictions from above, no surprises that jeopardize your sales.

Using Shopify is not without risks

The iDEAL limitation in Shopify may not be a disaster for everyone, but it is a clear signal. As a webshop owner, you remain dependent on choices you don't make, but which do have a major impact on your sales.

It's different with WooCommerce: you choose what your shop looks like, what payment methods you offer and what tools you use. More freedom, more control, less risk. Sounds good, right?

Still hesitating about switching from Shopify to WooCommerce? Then now is the time to think about more flexibilityand a future-proof webshop. And we at Tunity can certainly help you with that!
